November 2012 Member Spotlight – Spooky Edition

November 8th, 2012 No comments

A father. A husband. A veteran. Those are just some roles our friend, GS*Spooky, fill that make him so interesting. We are fortunate enough to refer to him as a fellow member since he first joined our group back in October 2012. With luck, you have run into him on the forums, in chat, or on the Battlefield 3 servers. Please join us in learning more about Spooky, about his love for horror films, and why you may see him at the local Gamestop buying Skylander figurines.

GS: Before we go too far, let’s address the terrible storm label “Hurricane Sandy.” Being that you reside in New Jersey, are you and your family safe? What has been your personal experience with this force of nature?

Spooky: First off, I would like to say thank you to everyone that showed their concern and support of us Gunslingers in the storm’s path. Growing up in this part of the county, we never had to deal with many natural disasters. In the past year we had two hurricanes, two earthquakes, two nor’easters, and a derecho. The news is saying that another nor’easter is going to hit us this week.

As far as Hurricane Sandy, the New Jersey Coast is decimated. Fortunately, my family and I live far enough inland that we did not suffer much damage. We lost power only for a few minutes and some minor flooding. We were/are very fortunate because we are surrounded by complete devastation. I am sure you all have witnessed the disaster on the television. It will take many, many months for any sense of normalcy to return here.

GS: You joined the Gunslingers as a Xbox360 player for Battlefield 3 on October 3rd, 2012. Which fellow members did you first game with in game? Is there any advice you would give other new members in regards to getting one’s self running and gunning with others?

Spooky: I was always a Call of Duty gamer. I started playing multiplayer games when COD 4 was released to the world. I was so disgruntled with Modern Warfare 3 that I totally stopped playing it. I thought I would go out and purchase Battlefield 3 because I heard lots of great things about it. After playing Battlefield 3 for a little while I thought I would look for a platoon to play with. I found the Gunslinger recruiting thread on Battlelog and applied.

Once in the Platoon, I remember playing my first games with the infamous duo of Tick and Dunkaroo. I know there were more Gunslingers in the game but their names escape me. Tick and Dunk made my adjustment into the community an easy one. They were great to play with and easy to talk to. They made me feel at home right away.

As far as giving advice to new comers, I suggest you get your names on the master lists and jump right into the matches. Don’t be shy. Be active in the forums and have fun. This is a great community where everyone treats each other with respect and everyone has the same mentality. It’s all about gaming and fun.

GS: In your profile, you state you are a Iraq Combat Veteran. What was your role while serving? Are you the first in your family to serve or are you from military line?

Spooky: Yes, I am an Iraq war veteran. I joined the United States Army a year after I graduated high school. I enlisted in 1996 where I went to basic training. My MOS was 11M (Mechanized Infantry). I was a gunner on a Bradley fighting vehicle. I was stationed in FT Stewart, GA and Camp Hovey Korea. After Korea, I returned to New Jersey and I went to college to get my degree in Network Management. Thanks to the ARMY my college education was paid for.

After 9/11 happened, I re-enlisted in the Army Reserve. I changed my MOS to 38A (Special Operations / Civil Affairs Specialist). I was deployed to Romania in January 2003 where we were being held prior to the start of the war. In March 2003, we were flown into Iraq for the start of the war. My unit flew into Irbil, Iraq which is in the northern part of the country. There we were attached to 3rd Special Forces Group and made our way down to the city of Kirkuk. Once in place, our job was to help clear the city of Sadaam’s loyalists. Once complete, we were tasked out to “rebuild” the infrastructure of Kirkuk; i.e.: police, fire, education, government. I spent a total of 15 months deployed.

GS: Speaking of your profile, why did you pick the username, “Spooky”?

Spooky: I came up with Spooky simply because I am a stickler for horror flicks. I enjoy the tense, dark, and spookiness of horror films. I have been a fan since my early teenage years. I relish all the work that goes into the costumes and make up. There is nothing like a good scare.

GS: What was the first game you ever played? Being a father, how has being a gamer affected the way you purchase, participate, and/or supervise your own children’s gaming habits, if at all?

Spooky: I can remember way back when playing Mike Tysons Punch Out and Tecmo Bowl. Not too sure if they were one of the first games I played or not. I am lucky if I can remember what I did last weekend, let alone something 30 years ago. LOL. With my son only being seven years old, I try to keep the gaming to a certain limit. My son is heavily involved in sports so that takes up most of his and my time. I purchased the Wii and an Xbox for him to use. He is not allowed on Xbox live. He mainly plays sports games and is big into Sky Landers on the Wii. Most of the other games he has for his systems are family fun games. We have Mario Kart on the Wii and the whole family battles each other on that one. I must admit that I get my butt kicked by him every time. He is not allowed to play on “Daddy’s” Xbox unless we play a game together. I introduced him to Black Ops, and we played some matches against each other in Combat Training. I can tell he has the knack for FPS games already. Watch out future gamers!

GS: You list sports as one of your interests. What sports do you enjoy the most? Do you have a favorite team?

Spooky: I enjoy most sports that are out there. I follow American Football the most. I have been a Philadelphia sports fan my whole life. I love the Philadelphia Eagles, the Phillies, and Flyers. This is a disappointing year for Philly teams. Ugghhhh. No wonder why I drink so much. Hehe. Also, I try and keep an active interest in football by playing fantasy football. I am in two fantasy football leagues this year. So far I have one fantasy team that is doing well and one that stinks.

GS: Okay. You are a tough-as-nails sort of guy. That said, what horror movie has ‘creeped’ you out the most? It is okay. The secret will be between just you and a few thousand people.

Spooky: Hmmm… That’s a tough question being that I love horror flicks. I am going to have to go with “The Entity”. The Entity is a horror film purportedly based on the paranormal events a woman and her family experienced back in 1976. This movie was released back in 1983. Now, I know the movie is a bit dated, but when I first watched it I was totally “creeped” out.

GS: The first item you mention as an occupation in your profile is being a father. The first thing you list for your interests is family. What is a favorite family outing for the Spooky clan?

Spooky: Since we are so close to the coast, we love to spend time at the New Jersey beaches. Now this is only a summer thing so during the winter we like to go up to the Pocono Mountains and get some fun snow time.

GS: What is an ideal day off for Spooky? How does Spooky enjoy it? It is okay if you answer by talking in the third person.

Spooky: Spooky generally doesn’t have a day off. My two wonderful children take up most of my spare time. If it is not the kids then it is the daily chores of the house and lawn. When Spooky does get some down time I love to get some gaming in. My gaming time has dwindled down a lot since having two kids, but I try to make time for it every day. This is why Gunslinger Gaming is the perfect fit for me. I am not pressured by a clan to put in certain hours every day.

GS: What is your drink of choice?

Spooky: I am a seasonal beer kind of guy. I am a big Sam Adams seasonal fan. Right now my beer of choice is Sam Adams Octoberfest. During the winter season I will be drinking Sam Adams Winter Ale and Sam Adams Alpine Spring. During the spring I continue with the Alpine Spring, and in the summer months I will sip on Sam Adams Summer Ale and Bud Lite Lime. Delicious!!! If I need a hard drink I prefer a nice chilled glass of Gentleman Jack. Smooth and to the point! A nice Dirty Martini is always nice too.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions, Spooky. It has been great having you as a member, and not only do your fellow Gunslingers look forward to gaming with you during your downtime, but we wish you and your family the very best!

August 2012 Member Spotlight – shotgunjen Edition

August 6th, 2012 No comments

For the members that have been with the Gunslingers for a few years, you probably have fond memories of racing some karts or staying up to the wee hours of the morning talking with shotgunjen. For the considerable amount of members to sling with the rest of us since that time, your introduction to her may have been through the ongoing love and support we all collectively post as she battles with cancer. However you know her, join me as we take a moment to learn more about the talented and creative soul we are proud to count as a fellow Gunslinger.

GS: You joined the Gunslingers way back in April of 2009. How ever did you happen to come across us, and what games are you playing now?

shotgunjen: I had just started playing MKW (Mario Kart Wii) and was looking for some nice people to race with. I searched the mariokartwii.com forums for clans and found GS/SS to be the most interesting. I visited the chat and got greeted by a whole bunch of friendly folks, and just like that I was part of the gang. I remember sitting up all night and all morning just racing and yapping on Skype, insane fun.

GS: Listening to your music that you have shared in the GS Jukebox, it is no secret that you are talented, creative person. How long have you been composing and writing music? What other artists have particularly inspired you?

shotgunjen: I don’t know about talented, but thank you, Lee! I’ve only written songs for a few years. I started in 2005 with my first songs, and now I haven’t really composed or written anything for the last couple of years, just bits and pieces (maybe that should be the title of my next album, “Bits and Pieces” hehe). I get inspired by a lot just in everyday life, but when it comes to artists I’d have to say that Tom Waits has been a great inspiration to me. As has Joni Mitchell, Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley, Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen … And more.

GS: Speaking of your music, your live cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is breathtaking. Can you tell us more about the setting and circumstances around that particular live performance? Where was it played, for example?

shotgunjen: Wow, thank you very much. Well, this was back in the days when I went to high school. We were having this concert in the school concert hall. And those who wanted to could sign up and then get the approval and the time on stage. I teamed up with this guitarist (’cause I suck at playing the guitarr, ssscch.) and we decided to do this song. I had loved it since forever and he, well he heard it in an episode of the TV series… I think it’s called O.C (lol). Anyway he liked it a lot also so we started rehearsing, and it all went well. At the day of the concert, the concert hall was packed with people and there was a really good mood. I couldn’t really hit the lowest notes because one to many whiskey the day before but people seemed to enjoy it anyway, and so did we.

GS: You have spoke of other creative ventures in previous discussions. What are some other artistic exercises do you partake in to keep the creative juices flowing?

shotgunjen: I just finished two purses, which I made out of leather. It was fun, but a bit tricky. I started on this crazy idea that I should make my own chess board, but I only made it to, like, four pawns, which I carved out of wood and then I got sick of it. I also made a bunch of bracelets made of braided tin wire and leather. Now days I’ve been making a lot of pottery. I also started on a leather belt but that’s on hold for now. Right now, I’m in the process of making these kind of silly looking owl paintings in bright colors for Stellas room, my brother’s baby.

GS: Being that you reside in Sweden, what are destinations a traveler must see while in your country to get the most out of their experience? Where are some places around the globe you have traveled yourself? Do you have any favorite spots?

shotgunjen: Oh jeez, what do I know of Sweden? (Starts thinking) We have a bunch of old castles, if you consider visiting a castle an experience… Hm… We have a lot of beautiful nature. I guess that’s about it. Oh wait, Gotland is nice (it’s an island in the Baltic Sea). We had a gig there, like, two years ago. I have been to America twice, once in Florida and once in LA. I really liked Venice, Lee! I traveled a lot with my family when I was younger. We went to Italy, Venezuela, Thailand, Greece like once a year and Poland. I’ve been to England at least three times, and I love Camden. I’ve been to Ireland three times and I really loved it there. Cork is beautiful.

GS: How many languages do you speak? What are they? Most importantly, how do you say “Frosty Pints” in each of them?

shotgunjen: English, Swedish, Polish and I can understand and speak a little Greek.

In Swedish: Iskalla stora starka (ice cold big ‘n strong)
In Polish: zymne duze (cold big)
In Greek: παγωμένη μπύρα (ice cold beer)

GS: Have you been watching the Olympics? If so, what are some of your favorite sport events in or outside of the Olympics?

shotgunjen: I don’t watch the Olympics much. Sometimes I have it on in the background, and it’s always fun when someone from Sweden wins, but I don’t care that much. I like to watch football. My brother, and my father too are big Chelsea supporters so I have seen a game or two in my life. Also I like to go to the local pub with Owl (The arcade freak in the forums) and watch the game when our city’s team is playing.

GS: Many Gunslingers at this point know you through your continued “Get Well” thread. We all are sending our love in your battle against cancer. Is there anything you would like to say at this point or comfortable sharing?

shotgunjen: I want to begin with saying that I feel pretty alright at the moment. The tumor (for those who doesn’t know, I’ve had a tumor which they surgically removed in 2008 that came back the Christmas before this one) is suppressed and not moving neither growing right now. I am not cured and the chances that I will be is like winning the jackpot on the lottery. The illness that I’m suffering from is called Anaplastic Astrocytoma, type 3. I won’t live as long as most of you. The tumor will come back, we just don’t know when. But when it does, I promise I’ll be a fighter and survive a third surgery, and I can take more chemo to curb it. So I won’t be done when it comes back. Unfortunately, I can’t get any more radiation therapy, since I’ve had a lifetimes dosage already.

The only ways that I’ve been damaged by these treatments are the memory. It’s not as good as it used to be. I’m more confused, slow and weaker. Other than that I’m pretty good. And I am so grateful for having the support of GS through all the rough times. You’ve made me cry, laugh and sometimes both at the same time. I am also grateful that I live in a country where there IS help to get. Man-oh-man am I lucky. So, I’m not that unlucky, after all!

GS: Which is more appealing to you during a particularly cold winter? Enjoying the snow with friends or reading a book near a fireplace? If the former, what snow activities do you enjoy the most? If the latter, what are your favorite authors? Of course, feel free to cheat and answer both scenarios.

shotgunjen: I choose to cheat. I’d build snow lanterns outta snowballs or maybe try to make a cave. Riding a sled is also fun. Dragging it up the hill, not so much fun. If I’d start a fire in my apartment, I’d probably get kicked out with my head first right into the snow, so lets say it’s a blanket instead. Hm. Favorite authors. I haven’t read that many books by one author. But I love Neil Gaiman, I just love the way he writes. He has such an infinite imagination.

GS: What is your drink of choice?

shotgunjen: Rum with coke (preferably Pepsi Max) and a LOT of lime or lemon. Or just an παγωμένη μπύρα!

Thank you, Jenny, for taking the time to answer our questions. We are lucky to have you as a member. Gunslingers, you can send your positive thoughts and well wishes via the Get Well Thread. Large or small. We are all in this together.

The Results of the 2011 Gunslinger Games Awards Are In!

February 23rd, 2012 No comments

2011 proved to be another amazing year for the Gunslingers. We had over a thousand new members walk through our virtual doors last year, each with their own preferences and inputs of what makes a great game. Those opinions certainly got reflected in the voting booth for the 2011 Gunslinger Games Awards.

Below are the results of the voting that took place in various categories during the entire month of January, 2012. Many of the categories were also present in the previous two annual Awards, but there is a big difference worth noting. The console specific awards this year featured only games exclusive to each console rather than allowing multi-platform titles as voting options. This change is based on feedback given after the 2010 edition.

Thank you all for voting and taking part in the Gunslinger experience!

Here are the results for the 2011 Gunslinger Games Awards!

———————————————-

Best Nintendo Wii Game of 2011: LEGEND OF ZELDA: SKYWARD SWORD
Runner Up: Conduit 2
Last Year’s Winner: GoldenEye 007
Notes: 2011 didn’t feature many new titles for the Wii; Skyward Sword’s win is no surprise. Even with more competition, Skyward surely would have won. Many reviewers, amateur and professional alike, hailed this newest chapter of Link’s story as the best to date. Considering Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was deemed revolutionary during its time, that is saying a lot.

———————————————-

Best Playstation 3 Game of 2011: KILLZONE 3
Runner Up: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Last Year’s Winner: Call of Duty: Black Ops
Notes: KillZone 3 has proved to be a juggernaut. While its comrades of 2011 first quarter releases (think Homefront) have come and gone, not only has KillZone 3 remained as a featured clan front for the Gunslingers, but it knocked out Sony’s flagship franchise, Uncharted 3, by a good margin when it came to GS member voting. To this day, GS still features weekly events, an active Frosty Pints, and regularly scheduled members-only events for KillZone 3 thanks to the hard work of Scars311 and proactive members such as Dunkaroo69.

———————————————-

Best Xbox360 Game of 2011: GEARS OF WAR 3
Runner Up: Forza 4 and Kinect Sports: Season Two (tie)
Last Year’s Winner: Call of Duty: Black Ops
Notes: It only makes sense that a Microsoft Studios title would win the Xbox360 category, right? Besides, it didn’t have a whole lot of competition in its general genre due to the company’s focus on launching the Kinect. Gears of War 3 still has its own section and recruiting front at the Gunslingers, and it retains the milestone of being the first exclusive Xbox360 title to have a Gunslingers clan. 2012 promises to have Mass Effect 3, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and Halo 4 all Kinect compatible. Next year’s edition of the awards may prove to be quite a show down!

———————————————-

Best PC Game of 2011: STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC
Runner Up: Minecraft
Last Year’s Winner: Call of Duty: Black Ops and Starcraft II (tie)
Notes: How does a person make the formula of World of Warcraft even more addicting? Why, by applying it to the Star Wars universe, of course! Players can play for any faction of the Star Wars realm as they wish and write new lore for the franchise in the process. Be forewarned: George Lucas may very well digitally add more imperial walkers in whatever you create at a later date.

———————————————-

Best Nintendo 3DS Game of 2011: MARIO KART 7
Runner Up: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
Last Year’s Winner (DSi): Dragon Quest IX
Notes: The Mario Kart franchise makes its triumphant return to the Gunslingers with Mario Kart 7, and the overwhelming amount of votes for the title over other 3DS choices reflect that. In fact, Mario Kart 7 is the only game in this year’s Games Awards to win two separate categories. If that milestone wasn’t enough, Mario Kart 7 is the first handheld title to earn its own Gunslingers clan front, complete with its own forum and chat section. Shell slinging on the handheld now with hang-gliders, underwater vehicles and custom community settings added some new flavor to the latest installment. Beware of the Shellslingers!

———————————————-

Best Role Playing Game of 2011: ELDER SCROLLS V: SKYRIM
Runner Up: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Last Year’s Winner: Dragon Quest IX and Mass Effect 2 (Tie)
Notes: Kiss your social life good bye. With a promised 300+ hours of original gameplay, Skyrim is Nirvana in overdrive for role playing fans. The game proved to be one of the top selling games during the Christmas season and has won the industry’s Best Game of the Year award. By the way, it is pronounced Sky-Rim.

———————————————-

Best Shooter of 2011: BATTLEFIELD 3
Runner Up: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Last Year’s Winner: Call of Duty: Black Ops
Notes: Drive a tank. Fly (or crash) a helicopter. Kick up sand in a buggy. There are so many options as to what a player can do in Battlefield 3, that a person doesn’t need to contend themselves with only running and gunning. Battlefield 3 proved to be very popular with Gunslingers. In fact, it now holds the record for the amount of GS members on the game’s Masterlists. Presently, the number of GS members listed on the BF3 Masterlists hover a little over five hundred. Now, that’s an army! Granted, a drunk army, but still…

———————————————-

Best Racing Game of 2011: MARIO KART 7
Runner Up: Forza 4
Last Year’s Winner: Gran Turismo 5
Notes: It was a battle between pure arcade candy and simulation racing. The Gunslingers sure have a sweet tooth! Thanks to Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS, we got to see some GSers return to active status and host nightly races with each other. May the cries, “Blue Shell Coming!” never die.

———————————————-

Best Platform Game of 2011: SUPER MARIO 3D LAND
Runner Up: Sonic Generations
Last Year’s Winner: Super Mario Galaxy
Notes: Mario has been the reigning king of platform games for decades. Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS shows that he isn’t about to hand over his crown any time soon. Wielding the perfect combination of Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario 64, and Nintendo 3DS graphics, Mario’s newest adventure lives up to the franchise’s own incredible standard. That’s not too shabby for an unemployed plumber.

———————————————-

Best Action/Adventure Game of 2011: BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY
Runner Up: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Last Year’s Winner: Red Dead Redemption
Notes: This category was a tightly fought one. Go figure that a crime fighting super hero would win. Batman: Arkham City barely nudged out both Uncharted 3 and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the title. The way that Arkham City expands on all the gameplay and the environmental arena of said gameplay has made it an instant classic. Having Mark Hammell play the Joker sure didn’t hurt.

———————————————-

Best Puzzle Game of 2011: PORTAL 2
Runner Up: Catherine
Last Year’s Winner: N/A
Notes: The puzzle game category is a new addition to the Gunslinger Games Awards, and Portal 2 almost single-handedly created the need for it. The game’s wit, attention to detail and dialog, along with a rich variety of problem solving throughout the course of the story should get everyone’s attention. If the single player action ever gets boring, the game practically begs to be played with a friend in co-op mode. Besides, you can always fling the robot he/she is playing as into a wall “accidentally” to subtly remind the person that he/she still owes you money.

———————————————-

Best Sports Game of 2011: FIFA 12
Runner Up: NHL 12
Last Year’s Winner: Madden NFL 2011
Notes: FIFA and NHL faced off and battled for the award down to the final moments of the polls being open, and FIFA won by a single vote. That is all-too-fitting of a win considering FIFA lost top billing in this category last year by a single vote. FIFA 12 has been marked as the best release in the franchise’s history, readdressing how it approaches the defense mechanics in the process. All the hard work paid off. In case any GSers are reading this who may be interested in getting either FIFA or NHL, there are active Gunslinger teams in both games!

———————————————-

Best Fighting Game of 2011: MORTAL KOMBAT
Runner Up: Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Last Year’s Winner: N/A
Notes: There weren’t enough fighting games to warrant its own category the previous year, but 2011 changed that. Mortal Kombat easily won in the GS polls over its competition thanks to the developers’ interest in bringing the franchise back to its over-the-top mature roots. No longer was gritty Mortal Kombat fighters engaging in fisticuffs with Superman. It’s spine ripping out time! Banned in Australia.

———————————————-

Again, thank you all for taking the time in the beginning of 2012 to cast your votes on your favorite games. Likewise, thank you for taking the time to read about the results. 2011 was an amazing year for the Gunslingers because of you, and I look forward in seeing what this coming year of releases brings us!

March GS Member Spotlight – The Bolink654 Edition

March 11th, 2011 No comments

GS*Giggles Signature Banner created by Jeff Heims.

March 2011 marks Bolink654′s one year anniversary as a Gunslinger member. Bolink654 is a bit of a husband and wife—Jeff and Giggles—duo membership, and we had the fortune to sit down and ask “the better half” her thoughts on gaming, couples who game together, and other questions to get to know someone we have had a great time gaming with this last year.

GS: You signed up back in March 2nd, 2010. What made you join the Gunslingers back then, and what is keeping you busy around here now days?

Bolink654: Well, my husband and I bought the game [Modern Warfare: Reflex Edition] a few months before we joined and we just loved playing the game, but realized there were a lot of clans we were going against. That’s when we decided to look into it and see if we would be interested in it, and that’s when we found GS. Ever since we joined the clan, we always have a group of (adult) members to play with and enjoy the game with. And I would also like to point out that the reason I have a win/lose ratio of 3.02 is because of my fellow GS. If it wasn’t for them I would never have even got over 1. What keeps me busy is the tourneys, forums, and of course the game [Call of Duty: Black Ops].

GS: In the forums, you go by the name “bolink654.” In chat, it’s “TheHeims.” Many people, however, have grown fond of referring to you as “Giggles.” How did that start?

Bolink654: The “bolink654″ is just something Jeff has always put on the internet as the user name. Well, with the “TheHeims,” it’s because my husband and I both play, but as a lot of you know, Jeff won’t talk on Skype, so I was the one on there. And when we first started using Skype, I was so shy I didn’t want to talk to them, so every time something was said or done funny, I would always giggle. So, every since then I was called “Giggles.”

GS: You and your husband game together quite often. How does gaming online as a couple affect the experience?

Bolink654: Well, honestly, when we play together, we look out for each other more in the game than we would for someone else. But then again, if we are on opposite teams, we try to kill each other more. The game is great, but when we play together it actually makes the game a little better.

GS: Recently, you purchased a second Nintendo Wii system. What were your motivations for doing so, and do you recommend it for other Nintendo Wii playing couples?

Bolink654: We did it because we both love playing the game, but hated taking turns, and we figured if we got a second Wii, not only could we play at the same time, but, if no one was on, we would still have each other to game with. And for the couples, I very much recommend it. Like I said before, it makes the experience of the game better.

GS: Being a female player in a franchise, such as Call of Duty, with an obvious male fan-base must bring about some amusing moments. Can you relate one?

Bolink654: Well, the other day, we were going against another clan, which were all males. We whooped them pretty good, score limiting the game. And like most other games that happen like that, they start having something to say, so I will respond to them, and when they realize I’m a girl, they either start calling me a hacker or just won’t say anything at all. :)

GS: We all know you like to game, but what other passions do you have? Hobbies? Favorite movies?

Bolink654: When I’m not playing Call of Duty, I am usually playing in Photoshop. I love to work with pictures. I’ve always been the type to love art and graphics. But during the summer and fall, you will more than likely find me in the woods or out on the lake.

GS: What was the very first video game you remember playing? Have you always been into video games?

Bolink654: Yes, ever since I was old enough I have been playing all kinds of video games. The very first one I remember is Mario on the NES.

GS: If there could be one place in the world you could go to vacation, where would it be and why?

Bolink654: Even though I have been there more than one time, I would still go to Eureka Springs, AR. Its just so beautiful there, more than words can describe, and so much to do. The people that live there are some of the nicest people I have ever met. And the town itself has so much history, it would take you forever to learn it. My favorite part of the whole place is the Crescent Hotel that looks over the whole town. In that place alone, the history is amazing.

GS: You are a big fan of the zombie mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops. What is the horror film that, hands down, scares the crap out of you?

Bolink654: Hands down scariest movie ever is……The Strangers!!! I will NOT ever watch that movie again. I was on my seat the whole time during the movie, and jumping at every little sound! I know it’s not zombies-attacking-people kind of movie, but you try watching it on a stormy night, with all the light out, and by yourself!

GS: What is your favorite drink?

Bolink654: My favorite drink is a frozen strawberry daiquiri. Regular drink would be a Cherry Dr. Pepper.

Thank you for taking the time to answer a few of our questions, and we all look forward to seeing you and your husband on the virtual battlefields!

Texas Hold Em Tournament Interview

July 22nd, 2009 1 comment

Texas Hold Em Tournament, 500 Wii Points

Texas Hold Em Tournament, 500 Wii Points

Gunslinger Gaming had the recent honor of having an exclusive interview Paul Gold of Digital Leisure, the makers of Nintendo’s popular WiiWare game entitled Texas Hold Em Tournament.  Below is how the interview went.

GS:  Before we get to the questions in regards to Texas Hold Em Tournament, we would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.  We at Gunslinger Gaming have been immensely enjoying this WiiWare title.

Paul Gold:  You’re very welcome! It’s great to see communities coming together to play some online Hold’em.

GS:  Please introduce yourself to our members.  What is your role at Digital Leisure?

Paul Gold:  Well as an indie developer we all take on many roles, but my primary function is that of supervising producer for our game titles.

GS:  How did the decision to create a poker related game for Nintendo’s WiiWare come about?

Paul Gold:  Me and a couple of the guys at Digital Leisure have always enjoyed playing no limit hold’em poker since the craze started a few years ago, and it just felt like the perfect game for the WiiWare service. There are so many passionate poker players, from the novice to expert, and a worldwide online forum with leaderboards just brings out that competitive edge.

GS:  How long was Texas Hold Em Tournament in production?

Paul GoldTexas Hold’em Tournament was in production for about six months from the first line of code to release.

GS:  For a WiiWare title, 500 points is a rather inexpensive price tag.  Was the price a goal from the beginning of the process or was that decided after production?

Paul Gold:  We decided early on that the price tag would be 500 Wii Points. As we’re all gamers ourselves, we always look for good value with a lot gameplay, and we think we’ve delivered on that with Texas Hold’em Tournament.

GS:  Gunslinger Gaming is a community for casual, mature gamers, and many of our members have downloaded Texas Hold Em Tournament.  Are you finding a certain age demographic downloading the game more than others?

Paul Gold:  We honestly don’t know who is downloading the game unless they contact us as you have. But regardless of age, if you’re a fan of no limit hold’em this is the perfect title for you. Plus, with Mii support included, people of all ages love bringing themselves to the tables.

GS:  Texas Hold Em Tournament may be a tougher sell for international Wii owners due to “Texas” being in the name.  How has the international download count compared to the North American region?

Paul Gold:  Actually the Europeans love their poker as much as the North American

audience! We released in Europe late March, two months earlier than North America, and have been in the Top 5 for many regions since release. In fact we’ve received countless emails from German, Dutch and UK gamers who absolutely love the game.

GS:  Compared to other projects, how is designing a title for WiiWare?  Were there challenges unique to WiiWare?

Paul Gold:  There are always unique challenges when designing products, but overall it was a great experience. Nintendo has a fantastic support group.

GS:  Were there any features to Texas Hold Em Tournament that Digital Leisure was hoping to include but couldn’t for whatever reason?

Paul Gold:  We would have loved to throw in a few more features like Wii Speak, but I think WiFi, Leaderboards and Mii support there is plenty in there already.

GS:  How about a Nintendo Wii poker game?  Does Digital Leisure have any plans to expand on its success with Texas Hold Em Tournament?

Paul Gold:  Well we have certainly been discussing internally all of the possible ways to expand on the success of Texas Hold’em Tournament and a full WiFi based Nintendo Wii disc title is something that could be green-lit in the future.

GS:  What other game related projects is Digital Leisure currently working on?

Paul Gold:  We have a lot of titles on the go for both WiiWare and DSiWare. However, a highlight in our upcoming lineup is ‘Copter Crisis‘ — As a member of the elite Helicopter Rescue Squadron you’ll be assigned to respond to any type of emergency anywhere at anytime. As the most recent member joining this elite rescue squad, you’ll have to complete training missions and get yourself comfortable with the latest in helicopter rescue technology. Once the Captain thinks you’re ready, you’ll be tasked with executing rescue missions all around the Black Wolf Canyon. Your Wii Remote becomes the control stick as you guide your copter along the canyons while avoiding falling rocks, severe weather conditions and even anti-aircraft fire!

GS:  Again, we at Gunslinger Gaming thank you for your time in answering our questions.  We look forward to your future endeavors and will be playing Texas Hold Em Tournament in the meantime.

Paul Gold:  You’re welcome! Thanks for all your support!
